Dunross Preparatory School and St. Joseph’s Convent, Port of Spain were crowned the champions of the 2nd annual Trinidad and Tobago Triathlon Federation (TTTF) Schools Multisport Series, copping the top honours at an awards ceremony held on September 16 for the best performing primary and secondary schools.
A partnership with LNG producer Atlantic, the Multisport Series was first incepted in July 2014 as an opportunity to help develop a generation of young triathletes who will compete in the TTTF’s annual Aquathlon, Duathalon and Triathlon events and also in regional and international triathlon series.
Atlantic’s Brand Officer Anil Seunath said that the Multisport Series was significant in its focus on school-based teams at the primary and secondary level, who are supported and encouraged by their schools. “Atlantic believes that this partnership with the TTTF will give young persons the opportunity to develop the discipline, commitment and perseverance needed to maybe one day wear our red, white and black on the international stage – much like Atlantic’s Olympian Sports Ambassadors George Bovell III, Andrew Lewis and Richard Thompson,” – Seunath said.
Minister of Sport Darryl Smith was also on hand to congratulate the budding triathletes and emphasized the government’s commitment to the development of the triathlon sport. “I think it’s going to bear a lot of fruit, not just for this sport, but for athletes overall,” – Smith remarked.
The 2015/2016 Multisport Series saw the participation of 153 triathletes from 17 primary schools, in addition to 98 triathletes from 15 secondary schools. With participation of approximately one hundred and eighty (180) students to date, the 2nd Series was held as two separate events for each school level, which Seunath described as “encouraging and favorable growth.”
At the primary school level, Dunross Preparatory School was the champion team, with Bishops Anstey Junior and St. Andrew’s Private named 2nd and 3rd respectively. At the secondary school level, St. Joseph’s Convent was awarded first place, with 2nd and 3rd place going to Fatima College and St. Mary’s College.
