Atlantic CEO says Trinidad and Tobago must continue to be world-class player in LNG


New Atlantic CEO Dr. Philip Mshelbila says that Trinidad and Tobago’s competitive advantage in LNG will allow it to continue capitalizing on opportunities in the global LNG business.

Speaking at the LNG production company’s 10th annual CEO’s Awards event on Saturday (June 9) at the Hyatt Regency, Dr. Mshelbila explained that Trinidad and Tobago as a world class player in the LNG industry has benefited from the foresight of establishing a flourishing midstream and downstream gas sector over the last 20 years.  “Many other resource-rich countries simply focused on the upstream,” Dr. Mshelbila said. The Atlantic CEO added that the next 20 years will nevertheless bring new challenges, as the world undergoes fundamental changes in energy consumption.

“It is therefore essential to position Atlantic to be competitive in this new world. The future continues to be bright for LNG, and now is the time for us to work together with all stakeholders to ensure that we continue to allow our collective expertise to yield the best possible results for the company, our shareholders and stakeholders, and the country,” Dr. Mshelbila said.


The Atlantic CEO’s Awards were established in 2008 to recognize innovative projects and programmes developed by Atlantic’s employees, service providers and NGO partners which help to build value for the company, Point Fortin and Trinidad and Tobago. Over the 10 years of the Awards’ existence, many of the winning projects have helped Atlantic maintain its world class reputation, as a safe, efficient and competitive LNG producer.

The awards were adjudged by an independent panel of five external judges –  Karen Darbasie, Group Chief Executive Officer, First Citizens Bank; Ira Mathur, Journalist; Gillian Wall, Group CEO, IBB Global Group; Fitzroy Harewood, energy industry veteran; and Charles Percy, President of the Venture Credit Union Cooperative Society Ltd.

This year’s winner of the CEO’s Award was “Contractor OnBoarding”, an initiative which focused on improving the process that integrates contractor personnel into Atlantic’s operations. The new system leverages customized software technology and improves efficiency, reduces cost and facilitates the seamless onboarding of contractors. Atlantic is now working with its service providers on a pilot project that will transform the initiative into a sustainable national model.
